As a Child, I was Afraid of...

VAMPIRES! Actually, I was afraid of them through high school, I think. I had a routine I performed that I was certain would keep them away. Since I was never bitten, I guess it worked! (Ha ha ha!)
  1. Reach hand around door jamb. Feel for light switch and flick on.
  2. Look carefully around the room. Look behind the door. Look on the other side of the bed. Check under the bed.
  3. Turn on the bed-side lamp.
  4. Turn off the overhead light.
  5. Jump into bed.
  6. Cover up, pulling blankets as far up as they will go.
  7. Turn off the bed-side lamp.
  8. Roll onto back. Pull blankets waaaaaayyyy up, over my shoulders, up to my chin, and from the inside, curl my hands over the edges of the covers.
  9. Lay very, very still and listen.
  10. Eventually drift off to sleep.
